The US Army Air Corp launched the first African-American pilot training program in 1941 in Tuskegee, Alabama. In August of 1942 the Walterboro Army Airfield base was activated to provide final combat training for the Tuskegee Airmen before they were sent into action. These trained pilots and crews went directly to combat in many parts of the world.

  1. My husband and I were just talking about this a few days ago. There was an HBO movie made about those heroic men back in the 90s and we both recall seeing it. Our country owes them a great deal of gratitude for their service.

  2. I'm excited. I just found out that one of the Tuskegee Airmen (Airman Leroy Bowman) still lives in Sumter SC and was at the theater in Columbia, SC today.
