When Does Art Become Ridculous?

An artwork of an overripe banana duct-taped to a wall that sold for $120,000

The artwork, titled Comedian, by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, was on display at the international gallery Perrotin at Art Basel in Miami.

When does anything you do and call it art become simply an absurd and silly notion.  Or is absurd and silly a form of art? That has always been and will be the question when art is concerned. The idea that a taped banana sell for one hundred and twenty thousand dollars is absurd and silly. But, it’s not just any banana. It’s not the banana but the idea behind the banana. Much like two artist can sing the same song and because of the timing, place and presentation, one may become a international hit while the other one never makes the radio.
Art is and always will be unexplainable in terms of how to or what to do. To all artist that find this hard to reason remember why you are an artist. Your inspiration should come from within and not from what’s popular or hot. If you chase the taped banana you may soon go bananas eating your left over ones.
