Happy Memorial Weekend

http://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/us/memorial-day

Happy Memorial Weekend

 Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May. It was formerly known as Decoration Day and commemorates all men and women, who have died in military service for the United States. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials on Memorial Day and it is traditionally seen as the start of the summer season.

Memorial Day started as an event to honor Union soldiers, who had died during the American Civil War. It was inspired by the way people in the Southern states honored their dead. After World War I, it was extended to include all men and women, who died in any war or military action.
Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day. The current name for this day did not come into use until after World War II. Decoration Day and then Memorial Day used to be held on May 30, regardless of the day of the week, on which it fell. In 1968, the Uniform Holidays Bill was passed as part of a move to use federal holidays to create three-day weekends. This meant that that, from 1971, Memorial Day holiday has been officially observed on the last Monday in May. However, it took a longer period for all American states to recognize the new date.

Senator Clemente Pinkney Portrait Unveiled

http://abcnews4.com/news/emanuel-ame-shooting/senate-unveiling-portrait-of-slain-sen-clementa-pinckney-05-25-2016

In Columbia, SC yesterday a portrait of the late Senator Clemente Pinckney was unveiled in a crowded Senate Chambers. The portrait was painted by a local and fellow artist Larry Lebby.  Members of Emmanuel AME church and community along with South Carolina citizens of various regions came to give respect.

In memory of the late Senator, my wife and University of South Carolina administrator gave each family member snippets of a Hydrangea. The roots with for and the plant can be place in a place that will give the Senator recognition every year. I watch as she cut each peace and placed in water bags. While she placed them in coolers for travel, I asked how why? After hearing the explanation I knew that the families would be appreciative of the gesture.

May the memory of what happened leads us to joy and not hate.

@TJCruda and @k_vinnnn did a social experiment
 to see what would happen if they placed some glasses on the ground
 in an art gallery. The results are... art.

The River Banks Zoo in Columbia SC

It has been a while since we visited the Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Gardens in Columbia, SC. I was impressed with what we had back then and I'm even more excited about what's happening now. We truly have one of the best in the world. I am also happy to see that it is still an all inclusive zoo. The prices on everything makes it affordable for all including the gift shop. Also look for the discount girl on the way out with $5.00 bargains.

With the new Zip-line, Waterfall park and soon to be open, the Sea-Lion center, it will take things up a notch.
Don't be intimidated by the parking lot when you come. We had to park at the very last parking spot and I just knew it would be too crowded to walk around. However, once inside the park it never felt that way. The only real line was the Botanical Garden tram. If you care to take the hill go right ahead. We all need the exercise.
Enjoy what we have here in Columbia, SC.
